This is my most requested blog post! Putting my schedule in one post is difficult because there are so many moving pieces, but I will try to give an overview below! I did my best to give an overview and provide a lot of links. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions! This schedule template is from Autism Adventures!
Here is the background of my classroom. I teach a self-contained classroom for students with Autism grades 3-5. I have eight students and two paraprofessionals. I have an OT and a Speech Therapist as well. I have two students who are more “resource” type students who access the general education environment for large portions of the day. I have four students who are accessing the general education environment for part of the day.
I also have two more students who spend the majority of their time in my self-contained classroom. I have a huge range of learners. I will do my best to provide lots of links to the resources in my classroom. TPT is the reason my classroom runs so well!
My assistants and I pick the students off the bus between 7:30-7:40. We take them for a bathroom break and get them settled in the classroom. We begin morning work around 7:50. I have two levels of morning work running in my classroom. My lower-level students use the morning work bundle from School Bells N Whistles. My higher-level students use the morning work bundle from Just a Primary Girl.
At 8:00, one of my assistants heads to a 5th-grade general education classroom with three of my students. Between 8:10-9:00, my second assistant takes two different students to two different inclusion environments. I have the other four students at this time. From 8:10-8:30, we use Mrs. D’s Corner adapted work binders for a morning meeting.
At 8:30, I teach math. In Virginia, my students participate in the Virginia Alternative Assessment Program (VAAP). The VAAP is an alternative portfolio-based assessment. I create all my own teaching materials for the Math VAAP. Each month we tackle a new math concept. You can check out all of my math adapted packs here.
At 9:00, both of my assistants are back in the room. This is a general work time. During this time, some of my students will work through their three-tier system. I will pull students during this time to catch them up on missed work. One of my assistants will also run a fluency center during this time. This is a prime data collection time in my classroom.
We have our specials block at 9:30. On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, four of my students head to Adaptive PE with my assistants. I stay in the classroom and run Reading Mastery with the students that remain. On Wednesdays, we have adapted Art class. I use the Easy Art pack from Teaching Special Thinkers. On Fridays, we have adapted music. I use the Adapted Music Work Binder from Mrs. D’s Corner. We also do hands-on music activities. Here is a freebie for visual directions to make tambourines. This is a favorite in my classroom!
.
At 10:00, we have circle time. One of my assistants heads back to inclusion with some students. My other assistant and I lead circle time. We have a flip chart filled with IEP skills for the students. One of us brings a student up to do a slide. The other one will take data on the IEP skill.
At 10:15, we have recess. When it is warm outside, we head to the playground. This eats into our work centers at 10:30. I’m okay with this because I am a firm believer in Let Them Be Little. My indoor recess options are not nearly as exciting, so on those days we just have recess for 15 minutes.
At 10:30, we have work centers. I use my weekly thematic packs during this time. My students work through the file folders and task cards included. On some days we will use the gross motor movement cards. This is a great way to expose them to the vocabulary they will hear during literacy group. At 10:50, we will have bathroom breaks and get ready for lunch.
At 11:30, students return from lunch and head into our reading class. Both of my assistants head to lunch during this time. I use the adapted books from my weekly packs during this time. Check back on Friday for a post on how I run literacy centers!
At 12:10, we have a break time. One of my assistants heads up to inclusion again and the other one goes with me. My schedule says rest, but it’s not exactly a rest time. We will turn on soft music and turn the lights down. Students might use sensory activities during this time. Students might flip through my monthly adapted books. One little guy loves to read the errorless books. This is another great time for my assistant to pull a student to the fluency center.
.
12:30 is another flexible time. Sometimes my speech therapist is here. On those days, the schedule says “speech.” When she is not there, the schedule says “work.” Either way, we continue the weekly theme. My SLP and I use the receptive language task and errorless pictures to elicit communication. We also might make the snack or sensory recipe from the weekly pack. My two higher-functioning students work on the leveled daily curriculum from the Autism Helper during this time. This is a great way to challenge them appropriately!
1:00 is my writer’s workshop. Another favorite time of my day! This is one time where my whole class is together. We use my graphic organizer journals during this time. I love that these journals have enough supports built in that my students who can write multiple paragraphs can work right next to my non-writers!
At 1:15, my higher-functioning students stay in the writer’s workshop with an assistant. She switches them to IEP skill work at 1:30. Another assistant takes a student for inclusion. I pull the lower-functioning students into the content block. We switch back and forth between science and social studies. I use my adapted science packs and adapted social studies packs during this time.
We have a group snack at 1:45. This is a great time to work on commenting and social skills. Grab my mealtime comment card freebie here!
At 2:00, I pull my two highest-functioning students to run Reading Mastery. My two assistants run afternoon calendar with the rest of my students. They use my color-coded calendar pack. They also always end the session with our poem packs.
At 2:30, we have a final bathroom break. At 2:35, we head to the bus for dismissal!
I tried to condense this as much as I could, but if your classroom is anything like mine, you can relate to the hectic schedule! Feel free to ask any questions!
